Trail-Ready: 8 Essential Gears You Should Never Hike Without

After my recent trip to Havasu, where the views were stunning and my feet were this close to staging a protest, I felt inspired to share my go-to gear list. These essentials have seriously leveled up my hiking game, especially as a woman who's not exactly 21 anymore (and honestly kind of glad about it). I’m all about hiking smart, staying safe, and making sure every adventure feels more like a joyful trek and less like a survival episode.
So here are the 8 life-saver gears I promise you should never hike without;
Hiking Poles: Your Knees Will Thank You
Hiking poles do more than help with balance; they reduce the strain on your knees and joints, especially on steep climbs and descents. They also give your upper body a workout, making your hike a full-body experience. If you're navigating muddy, rocky, or uneven terrain, poles provide extra stability and confidence.
Not sure how to use them properly? Watch our step-by-step guide video to learn how to make the most out of your hiking poles: [Hiking Poles 101]

Wind Jacket: Lightweight Armor Against the Elements
Weather can change in a flash, especially in higher elevations. A wind jacket is light enough to stuff into your bag and strong enough to protect against sudden gusts, light rain, and chilly breezes. Choose one that's breathable and waterproof to stay dry without overheating. And don’t forget a neck buff, hat, and some lightweight gloves; tiny things that make a big difference when it suddenly gets cold.
Water Shoes: For Stream Crossings and Waterfall Adventures
If your trail includes river crossings, beach walks, or unexpected downpours, water shoes are a must. They're quick-drying, grippy, and protect your feet from sharp rocks and slippery surfaces. Bonus: they give your hiking boots a break and help prevent soggy socks and blisters.

Blister Kit: Small Kit, Big Relief
Even the best-fitting shoes can betray you on long treks. A blister kit with a moleskine, antiseptic wipes, bandages, and blister pads can save you from hours of pain. Treat hot spots early before they turn into bigger problems.
Extra Socks: The Simple Comfort You’ll Be Grateful For
There’s nothing like slipping into dry socks after a sweaty hike or unexpected soak. Pack at least one extra pair to keep your feet dry, prevent blisters, and boost your morale. Look for moisture-wicking and cushioned hiking socks for maximum comfort.
Water Filter: Drink Straight from Nature (Safely)
Access to clean water isn’t always guaranteed on the trail. A compact water filter or purifier lets you refill from streams, springs, and lakes without fear of bacteria or parasites. Lifesaver in the wild, and better for the planet than plastic bottles.
For dependable options, check out LifeStraw for solo adventures and Platypus systems for filtering water for your whole group.
CamelPak or Hydration Bladder: Stay Hydrated Without Stopping
A hydration bladder lets you sip water while you hike—no need to stop and unpack a water bottle every time. It’s hands-free, holds more water, and encourages you to stay hydrated consistently. Staying ahead of thirst is key to keeping your energy up.
The Right Backpack: Your Portable Basecamp
It’s not just about what you bring—but how you carry it. A good hiking backpack distributes weight evenly, protects your gear from the elements, and gives you quick access to the essentials. Look for padded straps, multiple compartments, and hydration bladder compatibility.
A great hike is a blend of preparation and spontaneity—ready for what nature throws at you, while staying open to awe and adventure. With these 8 must-haves, you’ll move confidently, stay safe, and fully enjoy the beauty around you.
